304 and 316L are the two most common stainless grades for plates, sheets and pipes. Both are good, but they serve different environments.
Quick comparison
- 304: general purpose, good formability, good corrosion resistance for most indoor/outdoor use.
- – 316L: better resistance to chlorides (salt), marine atmosphere and many chemicals.
When 304 is usually enough
- Indoor fabrication, general construction, decorative surfaces
- – Low-chloride environments
- – Cost-sensitive projects where 316L is not required
When you should consider 316L
- Coastal projects / marine atmosphere
- – Chemical processing, food-grade washdown environments
- – If the buyer requires “low carbon” (L-grade) for welding performance
Tip: Always confirm the standard and surface finish
Common standards include ASTM A240 (plate/sheet) and ASTM A312/A554 (pipe). Surface finish (2B, BA, No.4, pickled) affects appearance and lead time.
