What Is Shipbuilding Steel?

Shipbuilding steel, or hull structural steel, is carbon and low-alloy plate certified by a classification society for the hulls and superstructures of ships and offshore platforms. It is not just ordinary carbon steel plate with a marine label; each plate must carry a class society certificate and a heat number traceable to a mill test certificate (MTC). The grade tells you the strength; the class stamp tells you it was approved for service at sea.

Normal-Strength vs High-Strength Hull Steel

Hull steel comes in two strength levels. Normal-strength grades (A, B, D, E) have a minimum yield of 235 MPa. High-strength grades (AH/DH/EH/FH followed by 32, 36, 40) reach 315 to 390 MPa and let designers use thinner, lighter plate for the same load.

The first letter sets the impact-test temperature, which is the real selection driver. D and DH are tested at -20 °C, E and EH at -40 °C, F and FH at -60 °C. A ship trading in the Arctic needs FH36; a coastal vessel may be fine with A or B. Choosing a warmer grade than the service zone requires is a common, costly rejection cause.

The Class Society Stamp: ABS, LR, DNV, CCS, BV, KR, NK, RINA

The owner and flag state specify which classification society must approve the steel. A plate stamped only to ASTM is not automatically acceptable; it needs the society stamp rolled or stamped on the plate and listed on the MTC. Common societies and their high-strength prefixes:

  • ABS (American Bureau of Shipping): ABS AH36, ABS EH36.
  • LR (Lloyd’s Register): LR AH36.
  • DNV (Det Norske Veritas): NV A36, NV E36.
  • CCS (China Classification Society): CCS AH36, CCS EH36.
  • BV (Bureau Veritas), KR (Korean Register), NK (Nippon Kaiji), RINA (Italian).

Most mills can stamp to multiple societies. If a project accepts several, ask which stamps the mill can supply from stock and pick the cheapest available; the underlying chemistry and properties are equivalent. Confirm the accepted society on the purchase order, the same way you would cross-reference ASTM, DIN, and JIS standards to avoid a wrong substitution.

Z35 Through-Thickness Steel

Where a plate is loaded perpendicular to its surface (T-connections, brackets, cruciform joints), specify Z35 quality. Z35 plate is tested for through-thickness ductility (minimum 35 percent reduction of area) to resist lamellar tearing during welding. It costs more and is not interchangeable with ordinary hull plate, but skipping it on a loaded T-joint is a classic weld-failure trigger.

Normalized Condition and Heat Treatment

High-strength hull steel is normally supplied in the normalized condition for consistent toughness, and EH/FH grades may be normalized or thermomechanically controlled (TMCP). Confirm the delivery condition on the PO and MTC. Some mills substitute controlled-rolled (CR) plate for normalized on AH/DH; for low-temperature service, normalized or TMCP is safer. Heat number, chemistry, and impact energy at the specified temperature must all appear on the MTC.

Welding Notes

Hull steel is welded with low-hydrogen consumables. Preheat depends on thickness, grade, and joint restraint; DH/EH thick plate needs more preheat than A. Control heat input and interpass temperature to keep the heat-affected zone tough. Thickness Tolerance and Inspection

Hull plate is sold by weight, so under-gauge plate fails ultrasonic thickness checks and over-gauge plate wastes money and payload. Cost, Lead Time, and Next Step

High-strength hull steel (AH36/EH36) costs more than normal-strength A. Z35 and lower-temperature grades (FH) carry premiums. Class-society-stamped plate commands a higher price than un-stamped, and lead time depends on the society, thickness, and quantity; class-stamped thick plate is often rolled to order.
