Every commercial and industrial building hides its power and data cables inside steel conduit — rigid steel tubing that protects wires from impact, moisture, and electromagnetic interference. The most common lightweight version is EMT (Electrical Metallic Tubing), a thin-wall galvanized steel tube. Specify the wrong wall thickness, standard, or coupling and your installation fails inspection, corrodes in a damp plant, or simply will not thread together on site.

What Is Steel Conduit / EMT?
Conduit is a tube through which electrical wires are pulled. EMT is a lightweight, thin-wall, galvanized steel tube joined with set-screw or compression couplings — no threading required. IMC is thicker-wall and stronger; RMC (rigid metal conduit) is heaviest and used where maximum protection is needed. All three are normally hot-dip or pre-galvanized for corrosion resistance.

Size and Wall Thickness
EMT is sized by nominal trade size from 1/2″ to 4″ (16–110 mm OD). BS 4568 uses class light / medium / heavy for wall thickness. Confirm:
- Outside diameter and length (usual 3.05 m / 10 ft, or 6 m).
- Wall class (light / medium / heavy) or schedule.
